Below is an extract from my novel, The Red Deeps, which explores the lives of the women who made their home in 1920s Paris. If you are interested in the novel, please contact Kate Johnson at Mackenzie Wolf.
The room was ablaze with colour that day, just as it had been when I first entered this extraordinary house four years before.”
‘My god, Gertrude!’ I exclaimed, walking into the sunlit atelier on 27 rue de Fleurus where my friend, Gertrude Stein, sat in her usual pose on her horsehair sofa, dressed in her usual uniform of corduroy and a waistcoat and sandals – the older woman posed beneath the younger version caught by Picasso in his now-famous portrait. ‘Your hair!’

That springy Saturday morning I’d arrived a little earlier than everyone else – eager to see my friend before her salon began and her ever-expanding collection of people surged through the courtyard and up the hallway stairs, all on the hunt for tea and fruit punch and Alice’s cooking and Gertrude’s quick, melodic voice. Hélène showed me up: la bonne who had been at rue de Fleurus in the years before the war and had come back to tell anyone who would listen how the people who’d enjoyed her company years ago – the people like Picasso and Braque and Matisse – were now celebrities in all the papers (‘I think she came back’, Gertrude said to me when Hélène knocked on her door, ‘just to measure up the younger generation. Like you.’).

Journalist

Below is an extract from my reporting from Bangladesh. If you would like to commission me to write for your magazine or newspaper, please contact me on sianm[dot]norris[at]gmail[dot]com
Tassafy Hossain is smiling broadly when we meet backstage at the feminist arts festival Women of the World (WOW) in Dhaka in March. She talks with enthusiasm about the packed programme that she co-curated, including theatre performances featuring disabled actors, and talks from leading women’s rights activists in Bangladesh.
Founded in London in 2010, WOW festivals have taken place all over the world, including in Pakistan, Brazil, and the US. This year, the festival came to Bangladesh’s capital city for the first time, in partnership with the British Council.

Hossain is determined to unravel gender stereotypes and build platforms where women can speak about their lives and experiences of everything from sex, relationships and abuse, to modesty and clothing. As a young woman in 2010, she founded her theatre group Bonhishikha (Unlearn Gender).
